Here's a fun one for the weekend! In my never-ending quest to find nostalgic, old "spooky sounds" Halloween records, tapes and CDs, I recently came across Dewmar Campfire Records.
Their modern novelty Halloween releases really nail that old, nostalgic spooky feel! I grabbed the Sinister Sounds of Halloween Horror record, mostly based on the incredible cover art alone. And I was not disappointed when I dropped the needle. Glorious spooky sounds that land this release square in the heart of my collection. They really did their homework on this release and it's highly recommended for your collection, as well.
One of the standout tracks is "The Scary Dream." They even went so far as to release this track on its own, stretched out to exactly... 6 hours, 6 minutes and 6 seconds. So good! And perfect to use as a soundtrack in your yard haunt. Dewmar really know their Halloween business!!
Enjoy this one in your Halloween display, in your Halloween playlist, or just because it's the weekend!
Mark your calendars for Tuesday, September 9th! Because that's when Shudder and AMC+ will premier Greg Nicotero's newest project, Guts & Glory, a six-episode horror-based competition series.
This one sounds pretty interesting and with Nicotero's name attached, should at the very least provide some great visual reference material for the upcoming Halloween season! Not many details on the show yet, but I'm definitely going to give this one a watch!
From AMC Networks: Guts & Glory flips the script on the traditional competition show – thrusting players into an immersive horror experience full of unexpected challenges. The new series blends the intensity of a horror film with the pressure of a survival game where contestants are confronted with their fears in various scenarios.
The theme of death is so prevalent in Egan's art. It symbolizes the transformative nature of change, where a part of ourselves dies to make way for something new. Throughout the doc, Egan is painting a custom built coffin. with every brushstroke, he reveals his deepest memories. The images on the coffin serve as a visual representation of his journey, capturing pivotal moments, emotions, and experiences from his life. Using his bold line work and vibrant colors to tell his story, the coffin becomes a canvas for his self-reflection. The images and his stories remind us that our lives are filled with countless tiny deaths, moments that shape us and propel us forward in life.
In the same vein, we show his death. We see Egan’s lifeless body lying in a cadaver lab, signifying the moment where he finds his voice through art. And then in the middle of a solemn chapel, surrounded by silence, Egan's painted coffin is placed in the center, standing as a testament to his life, encapsulating his story. He lays inside the coffin while also standing in front of it, staring at himself, which symbolizes the quiet moments of self reflection and change. This powerful visual ties together the theme of life and death in Egan’s art. This approach takes us on a journey that transcends traditional storytelling, while allowing us to intimately connect with Egan’s thoughts, emotions and what drives him.
I have been following Mike Egan and his incredible, stylistic art for the past few years now. This brand new documentary is an interesting look into the struggles, dedication and rationale behind his fascinating work. It's a candid and vulnerable look into both the artist and the person, and the creative process involved in becoming "established." Enjoy!
Slasher Dave's brand new release absolutely oozes with that ominous 70s tropical island groove that would make any maggot-ridden Italian zombie sit up. A straight homage to the blood-drenched horror films of Lucio Fulci and the glorious soundtracks of Fabio Frizzi, Virus Of The Living Dead is a superb throwback to Italian horror flair. Modern synth with a late 70s vibe. This is a must-add to your playlist. Enjoy!

I will freely admit that I rarely ever buy anything from Spirit Halloween. It's nothing against them, I just don't have a need for any of the horror tchotchkes or cartoon-y animatronics that they sell. Of course, this never stops me from hitting up the local Spirit each October just to see their offerings...
But in this case, I think I'm going to make an exception. Because Spirit recently released Haunted: Halloween ’86 - Spirit Edition, a full retro-inspired 8-bit (Spirit) Halloween game for the original Nintendo Entertainment System. This is absolute marketing genius.
I'm definitely a sucker for anything "nostalgic Halloween" and by the looks of the fun gameplay below, I'll be heading over to mom's house to dig out the old original NES system from her basement and dropping this one in to give it a try!
Haunted: Halloween ’86 - Spirit Edition is back in stock after selling out the first batch and available here.
A cold, weathered hand pierces the rust-laden earth of a late autumn night. Reanimated decay becomes the evening's guide. Masked faces bask in the fiery glow of a jack-o-lantern's illumination. A lifeless finger points the direction toward the next porch-lit house. For this is the night of ghouls and goblins and tricks and treats. This is the night of Hallowe'en...
