What really gets you into the Halloween spirit? For me, it's a wonderfully creepy, nostalgic tune. Something to conjure up black cats, ghosts, and illuminated pumpkin faces. Something that when I just kick back and close my eyes, I dream of trick-or-treats gone by and orange and brown leaves dancing by as they glide through a crisp autumn wind. Magic!
I recently picked up a copy of Justin Burning's wonderful Songs Of The Thinned Veil, a really, really cool collaboration between the iconic, vintage Halloween illustration work of Sam Heimer, the Halloween club of Cryptocurium's Order Of The Thinned Veil, and Burning's new Veil-inspired October soundtrack.
I was lucky enough to snag a copy of the limited vinyl release before it quickly sold out (for those that don't know, I am a self-confessed vinyl record hoarder, and the beautiful orange-and-black swirled vinyl on this release, coupled with Heimer's fantastic cover illustration made it a no-brainer for me).
Upon first listen, I was immediately hooked. Eleven Halloween-soaked, synth-driven tracks that really nail the feel of the season and really encapsulate that Thinned Veil style.
I already know that this is going to be my soundtrack for the 2019 Halloween season and I highly recommend it to everyone looking for some really fun Halloween sounds.
And luckily for everyone, the release is still available on Burning's Bandcamp page! Go snag a copy and let the sounds of Halloween envelope you!!
I freely admit to my love and adoration of the art of Sam Heimer. Is there any artist whose vintage-styled illustrations better encapsulate all things Halloween??
Three years ago, I took a chance on a new collaborative project between him and fellow Halloween artist, Jason McKittrick. The project was called The Order Of The Thinned Veil, a year-long celebration of all things Halloween. Upon subscribing to one of three levels, new Order members received amazing packages filled with illustrations and sculpted figures, along with a plethora of other cool Halloween ephemera. You even got a package of pumpkin seeds to grow your own in time to carve for the 31st!
I was instantly hooked. It was such a fun project to keep the Halloween feeling going throughout the whole year.
I jumped on last year's subscription, and it was even better than the previous year's offering. My Heimer collection of illustrations and McKittrick collection of sculpted figures continues to grow and I am fully hooked on the Order!
And now is your chance to join me! It was announced today that the 2019 Order Of The Thinned Veil subscriptions are now up and ready to order. Three levels to match your level of dedication (and wallet).
I CAN NOT recommend this fun project enough! So many cool little touches make this a mandatory Halloween fan's addition. Cool Halloween tchotchkes and even cooler Halloween art.
Our Halloween season starts today! Get over to the Order Of The Thinned Veil page, check out all the cool stuff and subscribe! How can you not!?!?
Last year, I took a chance on a cool little project called Order Of The Thinned Veil, a neat membership subscription club from Cryptocurium that celebrated all things Halloween. It became obvious that I made the right decision after I received my boxes of goodies: a fully personalized membership card and enamel pin, a wax-sealed certificate, an original story, custom-sculpted jack-o-lantern wall plaque and awesome hand-painted Halloween Cat figurine from Jason McKittrick, actual pumpkin seeds to plant in my garden, Halloween candy, and best of all, a glorious print from Sam Heimer.
For those that don't know, I discovered Heimer's work early last year and have become a HUGE fan. I honestly think that his art is the absolute embodiment of Halloween itself, and I will be adding to my collection of his work shortly. Definitely check out his amazing work here.
So fast forward a year, and the 2018 membership level reveals start tomorrow! I cannot wait to throw down for another year of amazing and fun Halloween goodies. Last year, I went with the "Trick or Treat" level, and I'm probably going to renew at the same for 2018. I'm really excited to see what they will be offering this time around.
Don't miss out on this super fun club! If 2017 was anything to go by, getting in on 2018 is a no-brainer!
