Mike Egan - Tiny Death 9

I am now the proud owner of an Ohio artist Mike Egan original painting! I pulled the trigger on this beautiful painting from his Tiny Deaths series, a collection of 100 small paintings offered up in early November.

I had perused what pieces I could see in the teaser photos, making a mental note of the pieces that stood out and caught my eye. And as the paintings sold off quickly as the online sales started, I selected Tiny Death 9. A bold, solid piece featuring a skeleton in a maroon hooded cloak and scythe on a flat, light green field, painted in Egan's signature bold and colorful folk art style.

I really liked the starkness of this particular piece with its block shapes and flat colors. It stood out from the rest of the more colorful and busy pieces, and is going to look absolutely great on my home office wall, where hopefully future pieces will also reside.

Support independent artists and visit Egan's website to pick up original paintings, prints, toys, books and merch (unfortunately the entirety of the Tiny Deaths series has sold out). Just in time for the holidays!

"Nightmares Of Halloween Past" By Gary Baseman

I recently grabbed a copy of artist Gary Baseman's new book, Nightmares of Halloween Past. And what an incredible book it is!

288 pages cataloging Baseman's extensive collection of vintage Halloween photography, which serves as the inspiration for many of his paintings also showcased...

Since the book has shown up at my door, I have spent quite a bit of time perusing its contents. So many wonderfully old, creepy, and nostalgic vintage Halloween photos alongside Baseman's now-iconic character style paintings. And the background stories give great insight into both the artist and his works.

I grabbed this book on a bit of a whim, but I am SO glad I did. It really straddles the line of being both an artist's book, and a nostalgic Halloween book. And if you're into either (or both, like me), I highly recommend adding it to your collection!

It is now sold out at Gary Baseman's site, but a few copies remain over at Two Fauns. Get on it!!

"Bones" Resin Figure By Mike Egan

I am SUPER stoked on this limited-edition "Bones" resin skeleton figure by artist Mike Egan. I actually picked this one up a few moths ago, but I figured I'd wait until the Halloween season to share it.

I absolutely love Egan's bold, folk art style that gives a nod to the traditional Dia De Los Muertos feel.

Rest In Peace, Basil Gogos

I came home from a long weekend trip to the unfortunate news that iconic horror illustrator Basil Gogos had died. While the news wasn't completely shocking (his health had been declining for some time), it was still saddening.

I had tried to meet Gogos at two previous horror conventions, only to have him cancel both due to his poor health.

Last night, I had set up a quick photo shoot to honor Gogos, only to have my computer crash and delete all of the photos. This was getting worse by the minute!

So, I only have the original scan of my prized Basil Gogos autographed "The Mummy" Topps trading card that I had won in a contest back in 2010...

And had I had the chance to meet Gogos at either of those two cons, I would have had him sign my well-read copy of his book, Famous Monster Movie Art of Basil Gogos. This book showcases his iconic, richly illustrated portraits of classic movie monsters, most of which graced the covers of Famous Monsters of Filmland magazine during the 1960s and 70s.
