Magick Knives - "Flesh and Blood"

A great new gothic post-punk track from Magick Knives that really encapsulates the dark, post-Halloween melancholy lingering around the Cemetery. Flesh and Blood is the second single from their forthcoming debut lp due out on Library Of The Occult Records. This one is already on my must-own list. Enjoy!

 

Samhain - "Unholy Passion" (Original Mix)

Three weeks into the Halloween season without so much of a mention of anything Glenn Danzig?? That should be illegal!

As I get older (and somewhat wiser), I have grown to really appreciate Glenn Danzig's lesser-known second band, Samhain. Much darker and more complex than The Misfits (whom I still love!), with a fuller goth/horror rock sound. It was the perfect mix of the raw, unproduced sound of The Misfits and the darker, more mature subjects of Danzig. Samhain is definitely my sweet spot come Halloween season.

And at the top of the Samhain list is the original mix of "Unholy Passion," the first song off of the Unholy Passion EP released in 1985. This mix was raw! Lots of reverb with a unique flat echo on both the drums and guitar. But the kicker are the chimes at the end, adding the prefect creepy element to complete yet another Glenn Danzig masterpiece.

(For reference, the entire EP was remixed for the later Samhain boxset, and this song was "cleaned up" removing all of that glorious rawness. Skip it and go for the original.)

Witching Hour - "Ligea"

Yes, in my vast swaths of music appreciation, I do occasionally travel down the path of Goth. I have a few songs that I genuinely love, including this recently discovered track from early 90s UK Goth band, Witching Hour. That jangly, post-punk guitar sound gets me every time!

And group, we're now down to less that 3 weeks until Halloween. The days are ticking down quickly. Are you ready??

Bauhaus - "Stigmata Martyr"

Matt-suzaka over at Chuck Norris Ate My Baby had a hilarious post last week, revisiting the dance scene from the 80s horror classic, Night of the Demons. And while most people simply remember Linnea Quigley's un-be-lievable "hide the lipstick" scene, possessed Angela's sexy dance should also be remembered. (Alas, poor Stooge...)

A boombox, covered in awesome Fear and T.S.O.L. stickers, turns itself on and provides the soundtrack to her fireside dance. What I didn't remember from this scene was the actual track that was playing: Stigmata Martyr by Bauhaus. After watching the dance scene at CNAMB, I went back and revisited the track itself. A great, early goth classic that went back to the top of the Halloween playlist.
