10 Years Ago: The Lorain County Zombie Walk

It's crazy how time flies, even in our haunt circles. Today, I had a few photos pop up in a "memories" timeline and I had to do a double-take on the original date.

TEN years ago today, I attended the Lorain County (Ohio) Zombie Walk. I was just starting to dabble further into self-made horror fx applications and makeup, and took the opportunity to show off my skills.

I took extra time to create this open flesh effect with rotten teeth, blood, and solid grey face tones that accentuated yellow-and-black colored contact lenses. I also put together a detailed "zombie outfit" complete with a rusty chain and lantern. (Not really sure what the lantern was actually for in regards to the character, but it made for a cool, eye-catching accessory that swung side to side as I walked down the street.)

And while I did not win "Best Zombie Costume," I was still chosen as a finalist and got to strut my stuff on the stage in front of the large event crowd. I had quite a few people taking my photo, and best of all, the closeup photo below was used on the front page of the local newspaper in an article recapping the event.

Looking back at these photos brings a smile to my face, as it was the starting point of really taking my love of haunting up to the next level. Enjoy!

Lorain County Zombie Walk, 2014

This past weekend, I made it out to Amherst, Ohio for the 2014 edition of the Lorain County Zombie Walk. A little rain in the morning didn't stop us from supporting the canned food drive benefiting the Lorain County Second Harvest Food Bank. The clouds eventually parted and the sun came out, making it quite a nice afternoon for a shamble through town with some fellow brain eaters.

I got to try out my newest version of the zombie, complete with longer hair and food coloring for the tongue. Originally I had black, but I forgot it at home, so I had to pick up some red for the walk. Still effective.

The zombies and survivors gathered at the town square before heading out for a stroll...

What does a Michigan fan expect here in the Buckeye State!? Ha!! A great makeup got him into the "Best Zombie" contest.

It was so cool to see all of the young kids decked out in their zombie gear, totally enjoying themselves!

Wait a minute. I recognize these two. Even without their secret weapon, they were last year's Steak & Shake zombies who won "Best Costume" and "People's Choice" awards last year!! Another great, bloody makeup this year.

After the walk, it was time to judge the "Best Zombie" and "Best Survivor" costumes. And for the second year in a row, I got picked to go up on stage for judging, along with four other great zombies. Sweet!

And for the second year in a row, I lost out. This year, the winner was a fine young gentleman with about 50 gallons of blood and a face full of centipedes and other gross bugs on him. Congrats, sir! You totally killed it!!!

A big thanks to my mom and aunt for tagging along and snapping most of the above pictures. Next year, you're both going in full makeup.

And a HUGE thank you must go out to the LCZORT crew for putting on another successful event for a really great cause. A lot of money was raised and a ton of food was gathered, showing that even the undead can get together to support the community. The countdown is on for 2015 and I can't wait. I'll have to up my game because third time is the charm...

Lorain County Zombie Walk, 2013

I had a chance to get out to Amherst, Ohio yesterday and attend the 2013 Lorain County Zombie Walk. I got the updated zombie costume ready and with my mom and aunt in tow, set out to spook the city!

This year, we showed up early and got a chance to snap a bunch of photos. Tons of zombies, survivors, soldiers, hearses, makeup artists, bands and vendors gathered to create a successful canned food walk to benefit Lorain County's Second Harvest Food Bank. A big, big thanks to L.C.Z.O.R.T. for setting up this annual event!

Got the chance to try out the new contact lenses!

There were lots of zombies...

...as well as a hearse/vw bus/car show.

The Umbrella Corporation showed up in full force. These guys did not mess around...

At the end of the walk, I was handed a slip of paper. I had done it! I had been selected as a contestent (sic) for the Best Zombie Costume...

I lined up with 5 other zombies to be judged on makeup, props and character...

...only to lose both Best Zombie Costume AND People's Choice Awards to the Steak & Shake zombie family and their secret weapon...

The cutest damn zombie baby who was munching on human fingers!

And even though I was bested by a pint-sized flesh eater, I still had a great day lumbering around for a really great cause. I can't wait to come back next year where I'll employ a secret weapon of my own - MY BABY!!!!!!!

The Newest Little Member of Highbury Cemetery

Okay group, we at Highbury Cemetery are so excited to introduce the newest little member to join our ranks!

Little Christian Highbury was born August 8th and is already considered to be our best prop ever!! He can't wait to start helping mommy and daddy in the Cemetery every Halloween (but for now, he's just content to sleep on it)!!

We're going to take a couple of weeks off to get things squared away and try to get a sleep schedule down, but we'll be back with a limited number of new props for 2012 as well as participating in the annual Countdown to Halloween.

And for anyone in the Northeast Ohio area, why not come out to the 2nd Annual Lorain County Food Drive and Zombie Walk on Saturday, September 1st?

This year's Zombie Walk is shaping up to be even bigger and better than last year! Come out at 11am to get your zombie makeup applied by some of the REALLY talented local home haunters, meet The Ghoul and help donate to a worthy cause in support of the Second Harvest Food Bank.

Unfortunately, we won't be able to make it to this year's walk, so stop by and tell 'em Highbury (and Little Christian Highbury) say hi!!

Okay group, I'm off to change yet another diaper! We'll be back soon to ring in Halloween, 2012!! Only 66 days to go!!
